FUTURE HISTORY

Future History is a Canadian experimental alternative-rock band founded in 2009 by songwriter and frontman Kevin Ker with lifelong friend and creative collaborator Justin Dillon. Known for haunting atmospheres, poetic songwriting and ambitious production, the band creates records that favour emotional depth and sonic exploration over convention.

Following the release of its self-titled debut EP in February 2010, Future History quickly established itself within the Canadian independent music scene. Early accomplishments included supporting Marcy Playground on tour, appearances at Canadian Music Week and NXNE, and nominations at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. The standalone single “Names for Numbers” later received national attention through Alan Cross’ ExploreMusic and Toronto’s 102.1 The Edge.

The band’s 2012 album, Loss:/self, marked a major creative evolution. Recorded over twelve months at Chalet Studio and in locations ranging from Montréal and rural Ontario to New York City during a hurricane evacuation, the album incorporated more than 50 instruments, electronic devices and found objects. Its expansive arrangements also featured a 35-person vocal, stomp and drum ensemble, along with guest appearances from Todd Clark of Pilot Speed, Jonathan Dauphinais of Beast and Kevin Pullen of The Dunes.

Released to a sold-out audience at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern, Loss:/self received international reviews, Toronto Independent Music Award nominations and Record of the Year recognition from Open ’til Midnight. Inspired partly by dystopian literature, the album explored the relationship between personal struggle, social pressure and the search for meaning.

Ker began writing the follow-up, Lungs, while living alone for six months in a remote cabin in the Ontario woods. The sounds and atmosphere of the cabin became part of the album’s identity, shaping an eight-song journey about reconnection, self-discovery and breaking away from external expectations. The result was a more immediate and organic companion to the dense, cinematic world of Loss:/self.

In 2019, Future History released For, recorded at The Tragically Hip’s renowned Bathouse Recording Studio with producer and engineer Nyles Spencer. The album marked another evolution in the band’s sound, bringing its atmospheric experimentation, emotionally driven songwriting and carefully layered production into a powerful new setting.

Across its catalogue, Future History has remained committed to making honest, immersive music without limiting the recording process to what can be easily reproduced onstage. Each release occupies its own world while contributing to a larger body of work built around reflection, experimentation and meaningful human connection.
